Rachel makes it two in a row in Bromont!
Off the back of last weeks win in Mt St Anne Rachel Atherton claimed her third World Cup win of the year this weekend in Bromont Canada. Bromont the fifth of seven stops on the Nissan World Cup series presented the riders with a tricky and varied course. Most time was made or lost in the slippery middle section of the track where the hill steepened and the rocks became exposed. Rain continued to fall all week making line and tyre choice tricky during practice sessions. Despite a big crashduring her qualification run which saw her fly over the bars and off the track Rachel still managed to claim third fastest time behind Frenchwoman Emmeline Ragot and "brit" rival Tracy Mosley. Moving into the final Rachel had it all to do, she exploded out of the start hut and put in an amazing time on the top half of the course, her split was up by 3.7 seconds over current leader Sabrina Jonnier. Launching the final 25-foot jump it was clear she had enough to take the lead, her time of 3.14.45 was 2.5 seconds ahead of Sabrina. With two riders still to go Rach sat in the hot seat looking nervous, the time was good but she knew it could have been quicker. But neither Tracy or Emmeline had an answer for Rachel as both fell by the wayside handing her the win and her third World Cup of the season. Extending her points lead to 83 points over Sabrina means Rachel is looking the favourite to take the series with two rounds remaining. Rachel's brothers Dan and Gee had mixed luck, Dan crashed out in the downhill having qualifying in 15th while Gee kept his chase on the overall title alive with a solid 4th place. Gee had been struggling to get up to race pace all weekend and a few bad crashes in practice didn't help his cause, although his time of 2.48.09 was a little off the pace he still placed 4th and salvaged some valuable points for the overall. Gee holds onto 3rd in the series and knows what he has to do in the remaining two rounds. Another gruelling schedule for Dan meant he had to race 4X just hours after the Downhill, he rode well in the earlier rounds but was edged out in the quarterfinals during some of the best racing we have seen all year. Dan slipped to 4th in the overall but you can guarantee his shoulder will be fully recovered come the Australian round in three weeks. www.commencal.com
